THE STORY
The Story of Heer Ranjha is a romance written in 1766 by Waris Shah that is believed to be based on the true story of two star-crossed lovers who lived in the 16th century. The story is about Heer, a beautiful and courageous girl from a wealthy family in Jhang, who meets Ranjha and falls in love with him. On the day of her wedding, Heer's uncle feeds her a laddoo laced with poison, preventing her from marrying Ranjha. Ranjha helps Heer, but is too late, as she has already eaten the poison and has died. Grief-stricken, Ranjha eats the remaining poisoned food and dies by her side. The two are buried together in Heer's hometown, Jhang, and love-smitten couples and others often pay visits to their mausoleum.
